How did the bamboo plant
stalk get curved?
People see the fancy curls or wavy one and think that Lucky Bamboo
can grow that way. Lucky Bamboo actually grows straight and does not
grow curly or wavy at all. Farmers have to lay them on a huge long
table in the hot house, cover 3 sides in the dark, one side has bright
light and let them grow naturally toward the light, and manually rotate
them periodically; more work, more curl. it takes an average of 1.5
years to make one curl.
Can I get the bamboo stalk to curl?
yes, you can do this yourself and make it curl like the farmers do
when the stalk is fresh and young. The stalk is not going to grow longer
but it can turn when it feels the light coming from only one side for
certain length of time.
Will the bamboo stalks grow taller?
No. All the stalks receive special treatment when they have reached
the shape and length needed. They only keep growing green leaves
and stay green in either water or soil.
Can I propagate the bamboo stalks?
You can get any length of bamboo stalk and clean cut the bottom to
the preferred length, as it will root again in about 2 months in
warm weather. You can also clean cut the Lucky Bamboo stalks from
the top; usually the top 2 or 3 joints will sprout again in 3 months
in the summer.
How long can I expect my Lucky Bamboo to last?
Indefinitely! Just keep your bamboo well watered and apply a couple
drops Green-Green fertilizer each time you change the water. Also,
keep your bamboo away from direct heat.
What is the best way to keep Lucky Bamboo healthy?
Lucky Bamboo is considered extremely easy to take care of if you
follow a few simple rules to provide the perfect conditions for
a long, healthy life. First, avoid too much sunlight. Lucky Bamboo
grows naturally under the canopy of wet tropical rain forests.
It needs very little sunlight to thrive. In general, the more indirect,
the better. If you see burning or browning on the tips of the leaves,
the location may receive too much sunlight. Lucky Bamboo must be
kept moist all the time. It prefers a few inches of fresh, or filtered
water. It will also thrive in a soil mixture as long as this soil
holds a lot of water. Since neither water or soil contains the
vitamins, mineral and hormones that are found in it's natural growing
environment, supplementation is recommended. One drop of Green-Green
fertilizer added each time the water is refreshed, or changed is
all that is needed.
What causes the leaves or stalks to turn yellow?
After considering the possibility of too much light, the next element
to consider is the source of the water you are using. If you live
in a city where fluoride is added to the water, or has a high chlorine
or salt content, one of a combinations of these factors will cause
this problem. Yellowing is first seen at the tip of the leaves
and then spreads throughout the whole stalk until it dies. It is
vital to provide pure, clean water, either by adding an effective
filtering system to your tap, or by purchasing water for this purpose.
If you suspect that this is your problem, and you improve the quality
of your water, allow time for healthy, new foliage to form before
concluding that something else must be wrong.
Can Lucky Bamboo be planted outdoors?
Unless you live in a tropical rain forest-no. It does not respond
will to temperatures below 60 degrees F., must be kept very moist
at all times and cannot tolerate direct sun. Keep Lucky Bamboo
inside where it will thrive and enhance your living or working
environment.
